  • On-water safety is co-ordinated by the Busselton Surf Life Saving Club with assistance from other surf life-saving clubs.
  • Surf Life Saving (SLS) have jet skis, IRB’s, surf skis, board paddlers, spotters on the jetty, life-saving equipment and radio communications. They are highly trained for this role and are your first option if you need help in the water. Raise your arm to attract attention.
  • Follow the yellow buoys and keep a safe distance away from the Jetty. If you stray too far off course SLS will guide you back.
  • Tired swimmers may hang on to a ski or a float. You will not be disqualified unless your forward progress is aided.
  • Swimmers or support craft are not permitted to go under any part of the Jetty unless directed by race officials.
  • Participants and spectators may not swim or stand in the cordoned off area near the finish line that is needed for essential Surf Life Saving personnel and equipment.
  • All vessels in the vicinity of the event must comply with and abide by the Navigable Waters Regulations. Race officials will enforce and police these regulations as part of the overall safety provisions for the Event. Unauthorised craft may not enter the swim exclusion zone (within 250m of the Jetty).
  • This event has been granted a part exemption from these regulations for bona fide support craft only.

Helicopter patrol

  • The surrounds of the swim will be patrolled forlarge marine species prior to and during Sunday’s events. A pilot and spotter will be in continuous radio contact with the SLS Water Safety Coordinator and Race Director. Please note that whilst water safety provisions are made for Saturday’s events (500m & Kids Swim), the helicopter patrols are not in place on this day.

Evacuation

  • The on the water emergency evacuation signals are: 3 short air horn blasts; raised red flags by spotters on the jetty; and continuous whistles by surf ski paddlers.
  • If you see or hear any of these signals, please exit the swim as directed by SLS personnel.
  • There are ladders every 75m along the Jetty marked with banner flags.  These flags are numbered to assist with evacuation and emergency responses.
  • Landings are marked by large pink buoys.  Please follow directions given by the SLS officers on the water or via the public address system on land.
  • The emergency muster point is near the stage in the grass amphitheatre, adjacent to Shelter Brewery.

Personal support craft

  • If you feel you have a special need requiring your own support or provisions, prior written permission from the Organisation must be obtained.  This request must be made as part of your online entry under ‘special needs’.
  • Support paddlers must be pre-approved and are required to attend the SLS briefing and wear the hi-viz vest provided.  All support paddlers must see event officials at check in.
  • An exclusion zone will be in effect under control of the Department of Transport.  Paddlers breaching the exclusion zone may be subject to cautions or fines.

Stingers

  • Concerned swimmers should be prepared and take personal measures for protection.
  • Preventative measures include wearing a stinger suit or rash vest and applying protective lotion.

Resource Information

Road Safety

Event organisers recommend participants and spectators who are intending to drive to Busselton for the event, should prepare a fatigue management plan prior their drive.

Some simple tips to manage fatigue and consider in the lead up to the event.

  • Plan your trip and allow for scheduled stops to help keep you alert.
  • Be aware of how much sleep you have had in the previous nights before the drive and event. A lack of sleep in the few days before can impact your fatigue management for the drive.
  • If possible, share the driving, swap drivers every 200km / 2hrs, or if you feel tired.
  • Create a fatigue management plan – this may be a big weekend for some competitors, not only the swim but the potential of a long drive before and after the event.
  • Ensure you have planned for regular stops on both drives to stop and revive.

If you notice signs of fatigue, it is best to get out of the car, walk around for a bit and have a drink, this will help a driver remain focused.

Some suggested resources to manage your fatigue and prepare for the drive to and from the event.

Swaps or transfers between individuals are not permitted for the 2024 event. Withdrawn registrations will be offered to the next eligible person on the official waitlist.

On closure of the Ballot Period (opens Sunday 1st October 2023, closes Monday 9th October 2023), entries will be allocated at random according to allocation processes and places available in the event. All initially unsuccessful Ballot entries will form the Waitlist. The Waitlist will be live on the event website on Monday 16th October 2023.

Please don’t swim without a valid entry; for the sake of you and your loved ones, for the sake of Surf Life Saving, your fellow swimmer’s and the event organisers and supporters. Our event is looked at closely each year for safety and if we can’t show that we run a safe event then the Busselton Jetty Swim will not be permitted, simple as that! We (SLS and the Volunteer BJS Event organisers) need every swimmer’s entry details as a minimum to assist with our duty of care on race day. As an unregistered swimmer we don’t know your name, age, level of fitness, special needs, medical condition, emergency contact etc. You also have not agreed to our conditions of participation or agreed to accept responsibility for the risks that an open water swim presents. Any breach of the Race Rules and / or Code of Conduct will result in the swimmer/s being banned from participating in the Event for a period of two years.

So every un-entered swimmer throws a level of doubt onto the management of the event and causes direct concern for those volunteers doing their best to look out for the safety of you and 5000 other swimmers. Please don’t disrespect the volunteers, Surf Life Saving and your fellow swimmers who work so hard to make the Busselton Jetty Swim such a great annual event.

One of our risk controls for the Kids Swim is to limit the number of children to 8 per wave at 30 second intervals and not to have adults in the water thus reducing the likelihood of collisions and allowing SLS to focus solely on the children and to do their job unimpeded.

If a child has a particular need for additional on-water support, then an emailed request to juniors@busseltonjettyswim.org.au will be considered on its merits.

Yes, swimmers can log-on to their entry and edit swimmer details including estimated swim time using the log-in and password from their confirmation email. This can be completed any time before 5th February 2023.

Choose the same estimated swim time. Estimated swim time is used to allocate your start wave (fastest swimmers start first). We would suggest not choosing a popular time like 60, 70, 80 or 90 minutes if you wish to swim together. Start waves have a maximum of 400 swimmers. Should more than 400 swimmers select the same estimated swim time they will be split according to date entered. Choosing an odd time like 0hr 57min 21sec, 83min 16sec, 1hr 12min 48sec etc with your friend will maximise your chances of being in the same start wave. Swimmers can log-on to their entry and edit swimmer details including estimated swim time using the log-in and password from their confirmation email.

Private swaps will not be permitted. A swimmer swimming under another person’s entry or category will result in both swimmers being banned from participating in the event for a period of two years.
